Content Marketing Has A Reputation: Can It Be Fixed?

Content Marketing Has A Reputation: Can It Be Fixed? | KnowledgeVision BlogIt’s sort of like watching your little league team get an award at Fenway Park.

For a few minutes, the kids wave, the crowd cheers, and parents beam. Then the pros take the field, the announcer says “wasn’t that nice”, and the people at home see more beer ads.

For several months, the townspeople talk about it in the barber shops, then everything goes back to the way it was.

That’s how I felt reading An Apology to Content Marketers by Shel Israel over at Forbes Magazine. For a few minutes, it felt like content marketing was getting some respect in front of a wider audience.

If It’s Wednesday, This Must Be #CMWorld: Twelve Ways To Make Content Interesting

If It's Wednesday, This Must Be Columbus: Twelve Ways To Make Content InterestingAnother day, another marketing event!

I’ve been excited about this trip to Content Marketing World 2012 (#CMWorld) for some time. For one, it’s the largest gathering of content marketing professionals in the world. Two, it’s presented by our friends at the Content Marketing Institute. Three, I’m heavily involved in content marketing and am excited to meet so many other people who are versed in the same stuff. Four, we’ll get to swoon over the brilliant speakers as they impart their experience to us.

Five, it’s during the biggest week in my marathon training schedule (50+ miles) and I’m jazzed about running the Scioto Mile, a riverfront park and pavilion and the centerpiece of Columbus’ riverside trail network. Incidentally, I learned about the trails while tweeting with The Columbus Marathon (@CbusMarathon).

The Apple v. Samsung Decision: What it Means for Mobile Content

The Apple v. Samsung Decision: What it Means for Mobile ContentBy now you know the news: Samsung lost. Big. The company will have to pay Apple at least $1.05 Billion in royalties for infringing on iPhone patents, boosting Apple’s bank account by about 1%. But some other companies got caught in the crossfire, notably Google, maker of the Android operating system. Samsung is the largest maker of smartphones running the Android OS.

The Samsung devices affected are mostly older models like the Galaxy S II and Epic 4G. This pulls the rug out from under your smug friends who ran out to get those cool Android phones, because they were really just iPhones. Ha ha.

Social Reach Has Gotten Easier: And That’s The Problem

Attribution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kelbycarrA few days ago I was on a conference call where a participant said “Social media has made it harder to reach people.” My left eyebrow immediately shot to the ceiling. I got the point – that people are connected 24-7 now, and it’s hard to attract attention – but it still seemed like an incomplete statement. It is actually much easier to reach people using social media, but it’s hard to know who, when, where, and why they respond.

I thought about the reasons that social tools have made it ‘harder’, and how they translate directly into problems that we, as marketers, can solve.

The Ten Essentials: How To Get Noticed in the Content Marketing Storm

Extreme Video Marketing: How To Get Noticed in the Content Marketing StormIn my spare time I clamber around in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. And I’m not talking about 20-minute jaunts to pretty waterfalls. I mean multi-day adventures with one of my children and all our gear on my back. Now, New Hampshire’s mountains are smaller than most peaks around the world, and even the most remote peaks are no more than a half-day’s hike from a road complete with restaurants, hotels, and gas stations, but what they do have is extreme weather.

According to Not Without Peril by Nicholas Howe, three major storm systems gather over Mt. Washington, New Hampshire’s highest peak, throughout the year, causing sudden thunderstorms and whiteouts. The wind, which can be gusty on the best of days, is a major factor, because it robs you of warmth, your breath, and will. People who lose the trail in a whiteout are immediately on their own, with no chance to be heard.

It reminds me of content marketing (Bear with me here).
